Day 3 on the Pegasus Company course at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick, finds Second Lieutenant Sam Westlake among 37 remaining candidates tackling a 7.5 mile tab with 37lbs of weight on their backs. Here’s his blog…

The Officers were reminded today of their duty to encourage and motivate the junior ranks on and off the training area.  It seems that the intensity of the PT is starting to take its toll on people and after this afternoon’s introduction to casualty carries and use of the bayonet, morale for some is waning.  Personally I know there’s only 2 days’ more hard work before a break in Newcastle and that’s enough motivation.

This morning the remaining 37 had a fast 7.5 mile tab with the usual weight of 37lbs.  This includes, water, chocolate and a spare t-shirt but excludes the weapon.  We had the pleasure of the Commanding Officer’s company on this tab and he paid particular attention to the officers.  At one stage I was horrified to see him leading a runaway from the front whilst casually chatting to the OC.  I am now starting to wonder if the Commanding Officer of 2 ITB and P Company is in fact half dog…

  2. Well done Sam – keep on in there and please keep motivating the troops. Good to see standards are not slipping. I had the privilege of P Company 18 years ago, when I was an RMP officer.. imagine how hard a time i had… :-). Leadership starts the moment morale starts to wane, that’s when we earn our money. Good luck and best wishes to you all. John in Singapore.
