Soldier under Training (SuT) Jamie Davies is currently undergoing Phase 1 training at the Army Training Centre, Pirbright. In his latest blog he reports on what’s been happening, including a less than satisfactory drill test!
We have our drill test next week, which we need to pass to progress in training. If we don’t pass there is a re-test scheduled into the programme, but if you fail the re-test then usually you go back a week or two to re-learn some of the steps. We all really want to pass because if we don’t then we might not get our long weekend break which is next weekend! Our first practice did not go very well at all and ended in us all getting a bit of a telling off from the Troop Sergeant. He wasn’t very happy with us. To be honest, we were all over the place. Everyone just seemed to be getting really confused.
After a lot of practice, we seem to have it together now and we’re working more as a Troop rather than individuals. I think we are nearly ready.
We have also been on the ranges this week. We fired from a few different positions. It was great fun and I scored quite well!
Half way through the week we had battle physical training (PT) and learnt how to climb, vault over obstacles and do different rolls. We also learnt how to climb ropes. Although during battle PT you get really wet and muddy, you still have to make sure that when you’re parading outside the front of the gym before the lesson your kit is neat and ironed. If it’s not the lesson just gets tougher and tougher!
We’ve also been learning how to read maps which is a lot easier than I thought it would be. I think on our next exercise we have a map reading test, I should probably pass because I haven’t found anything too tricky yet.
Next week as I said is week 7, the long weekend awaits us! I can’t wait to get home and see my family and wind down a bit. Life here although enjoyable is very busy.
